Chocolat

Chocolat is a 2000 film based on the novel of the same name by Joanne Harris, and was directed by Lasse Hallström. Adapted by screenwriter Robert Nelson Jacobs, Chocolat tells the story of a young mother, played by Juliette Binoche, who arrives at the fictional, repressed French village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes with her six-year-old daughter and opens La Chocolaterie Maya, a small chocolaterie. Her chocolate quickly begins to change the lives of the townspeople. The movie is of spiritual significance.

Rumi

The film takes us on a riveting journey through the life of Rumi and his mentor and spiritual guide, Shams (The Sun) of Tabriz. The first climactic event of the film is the often retold, dramatic meeting of the two men, and Rumi’s immediate devotion to his teacher. The life of Rumi and his experiential journey through mysticism will be a film that transcends time and place, a joy for all generations.
It is produced by Malcom Clark (two-time Academy Award winner) and Scott Frank (Emmy Award winner) as well as executive producer Bahrm Heidari.

Had Anhad (Bounded-Unbounded)

Kabir was a 15th century mystic poet of north India who defied the boundaries between Hindus and Muslims. He had a Muslim name and upbringing, but his poetry repeatedly invokes the widely revered Hindu name for God – Ram. Who is Kabir”s Ram? This film journeys through song and poem into the politics of religion, and finds a myriad of answers on both sides of the hostile border between India and Pakistan.

Island

A test for your courage and powers of reflection. Sometimes consensual realities, views of reality that are reinforced by those immediately around us, keep us locked into worldviews that may be utterly absurd from broader perspectives. (Available on DVD)

A depiction of journey of Gurdjieff in search of Sufi practices and traditions.

Waris Shah

This is a recent fictionalized account using real characters from a segment of life of Waris Shah when he was writing Heer. Not much is known about his life beyond a few sketches. The movie, apparently a low-budget production, captures well some of the struggles Waris Shah was facing while writing his version of the much older legend. (Available on DVD)

Heer Ranjha

As a cultural experience, it would be good to check out the classic, Pakistani, Punjabi movie, Heer Ranjha. (Available on DVD)
